What is a hall pass?

A hall pass is typically a small document or card that gives a student permission to leave a classroom or designated area and move freely around a school building during school hours. Hall passes are commonly used to monitor and track students' whereabouts while ensuring that they have a valid reason for being outside of their designated class.

Teachers or school staff will typically issue hall passes to students when they need to use the restroom, visit the school nurse, retrieve an item from their locker, or complete other necessary tasks outside of the classroom. Students are typically required to present their hall pass to any staff member who asks to see it while they are out of class.

Hall passes may be color-coded or have specific information written on them to indicate the reason for the student's absence from class and the time period during which the pass is valid. Failure to have a valid hall pass or misuse of a hall pass may result in disciplinary action by the school.
